‘Naked’ is a new dance film-poem created in partnership with Redstorm Productions.
This is a poem, a dance, and a film that exposes the duality of light and dark in the female form. Both on the surface through skin, and the substances beneath.
The choreographic process was rooted in the translation of the rhythms, syntax, and visual shapes found within the original poem, into movement. Some sections of choreography were formed as a result of direct re-shaping of the words through the body, while others were improvised with the poem read aloud. The central theme of the poem – of undressing and revealing both the light and shadow a woman keeps -directed the lens to focus on intense moments of shadow and darkness, against alluring, skin-coloured tones of light.
This film not only celebrates the female form in all its darker and deeper complexities, but also gives focus to the ‘lens’ of poetry, and how we, the writer or poet, might enlighten ourselves to our darker fragilities, our deeper lines, through the intensity of our own gaze. In doing so, we might find them transformed, enlightening others to their existence and bringing them to the surface for acceptance.
The poem ‘Naked’ was originally published by Envoi (2016) and appears in ‘Unable Mother’, published by V.Press.
‘Time’ – a new response-based commission to voice.
This is the beginning of a new creative exploration into how voice inspires physical reaction. Rather than using text on the page , we’re exploring the textures, lilts, and vibrations of spoken word to make the movement happen. Below is a rough cut of a few ideas.
Stay tuned…
